Magnesium Glycinate: Elemental Dose, the 350 mg Limit and Timing

MemoryFuel's second-heaviest ingredient is magnesium glycinate. Here is how to read its 300 mg label line and where it sits against daily limits.

Elemental magnesium versus compound weight

Supplement labels must declare magnesium as the mineral itself, not the weight of the compound it is bound to.[3] MemoryFuel's "Magnesium (as magnesium glycinate) 300 mg, 71%" passes that check: 300 mg is 71% of the 420 mg Daily Value.[4] Because magnesium bisglycinate is only about 14% magnesium by weight, and buffered chelates somewhat more, delivering 300 mg takes roughly 1.5 to 2.1 g of powder.

The 350 mg upper limit applies only to supplements and medicines, not to food, and exists mainly because higher supplemental doses cause diarrhea.[1]

Why glycinate

Magnesium oxide is cheap and dense but poorly absorbed and laxative. Citrate absorbs well and is also laxative. Glycinate, a chelate with the amino acid glycine, is well absorbed and gentler, which suits a daily drink. Magnesium L-threonate, marketed for brain uptake, costs far more and is not used in MemoryFuel.

Magnesium and the mind

A systematic review found suggestive evidence that magnesium may ease subjective anxiety in vulnerable groups, with study quality too low to be sure.[2] There is no strong trial evidence that magnesium improves memory in well-nourished adults.

Interactions and timing

Separate magnesium from tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics and from bisphosphonates by several hours. People with kidney failure should not take magnesium supplements without medical advice.[1]

Quick questions on this topic

What does 300 mg of magnesium glycinate mean on a label?

It should mean 300 mg of elemental magnesium, and on MemoryFuel the 71% Daily Value confirms that. The glycinate compound itself weighs several times more.

What is the upper limit for magnesium supplements?

350 mg a day for adults, counting supplements and medicines only, not food.

Can I take magnesium glycinate at night?

Yes, many people do, and it is generally gentle on the stomach. MemoryFuel can be taken at any time of day.
